This talks about the dark side and negative connotation associated with the showbiz industry at the time. Many say it was Guru Dutt's best work but it was a bit too much in my opinion. I still love it but I think it was probably lost on majority of the audience at the time, and even now for that matter.



Guru Dutt is a film director in the movie and is shunned by his wife's family because a filmmaking job doesn't have the social standing. He is marginalized, not allowed to see his daughter and ends up falling for Waheeda Rehman - which leads to additional turmoil in his life, and she finally leaves.



In the end she returns but he is ruined, ending up all alone...



You can interpret the story in a vareity of different ways. In my opinion, the movie was very well made and Guru Dutt was making a social statement related to his own profession.



I wasn't around then, but can't imagine the film industry having such a negative connotation. It was the only form of entertainment in this co
