A bewitching love story that holds us in its thrall, Parineeta is a welcome reminder of the occasional gem that rises above the Bollywood patina of trite scripts, plagiarized themes and cacophonous music.

Set in the early 1960s, Parineeta centers around the strong bond between a businessman's son Shekar and Lolita, an orphan living close by with her uncle and aunt.

As Lolita, debutante Vidya Balan dazzles in this movie as does Saif Ali Khan in his portrayal of Shekar.

The villain of the piece is Shekar's father Navin Rai (Sabyasachi Chakraborty) whose life is governed by his lust for profits. Navin plots to convert Lolita's house into a hotel to settle an old loan and also arranges his son's marriage to another businessman's daughter Gayatri Tantia (Diya Mirza).

The arrival of Girish (Sanjay Dutt), an England-returned businessman who falls in love with Lolita at first sight, sets off a series of events and misunderstandings that threatens to tear asunder the long-standing bond between Lolita and Shekar.

With a wonderful actress like Vidya Balan who as a debutant did a wonderful job in this movie. Its a simple movie but the characters are complex. Saif has done a good job with his role. The soundtrack is beautiful and compliments the mood of the movie. A must watch with the family. ... Collapse
